Laying BioGravel: an innovative, natural semi-paved surface

The 'Houtpark' at Be-MINE in Beringen keeps evolving as a showcase for sustainable redevelopment. As part of that story, we have taken an innovative step towards greener infrastructure.

By laying a natural semi-paved surface bound with a plant-based binder, we show that looks, function and sustainability can go hand in hand. The project fits perfectly into a vision of future-proof design built around water permeability, low maintenance and a natural look.

What is BioGravel?

BioGravel is our natural, water-permeable semi-paved surface, bound with a self-healing, plant-based gel. The gel is of primary plant origin and is made up of Plantago Ovata, minerals and silicates.

Mixed with carefully selected natural stone aggregate and water, it produces a durable, natural-looking surface that sits comfortably in its surroundings. BioGravel is designed for paths, squares and public spaces that call for a natural look without sacrificing strength or comfort. Thanks to its plant-based binder, the surface is water-permeable, low-maintenance and self-healing – a sustainable alternative to conventional paving such as asphalt or concrete.

Why this choice at Be-MINE?

The 'Houtpark' at Be-MINE is a textbook example of redevelopment and sustainable growth. Step by step, the former mining site is turning into a vibrant place where nature, heritage and recreation meet.

Choosing BioGravel fits that vision perfectly. Its natural look blends in with the industrial heritage and green zones on the site, while its permeability supports climate adaptation and lets rainwater soak into the ground.

    From production to installation

BioGravel is produced at our own plant, where natural stone aggregate is mixed in the right proportions with the plant-based gel and water. The mixture is then transported to the site and laid by hand or machine on a well-compacted base of crushed concrete. Once in place, the semi-paved surface is carefully compacted with a plate compactor or roller, depending on the size of the area.

The result is a stable, attractive and water-permeable surface, ideal for footpaths and cycle paths, park areas and other public spaces with light traffic.

    Sustainable added value

    • Plant-based binder: made entirely from natural raw materials
    • Water-permeable: encourages infiltration and prevents puddles
    • Self-healing: keeps its structure after rain or minor damage
    • Strong and low-maintenance: built for heavy foot and bicycle traffic
    • Low ecological footprint: an alternative to fossil-based paving

A step forward in circular infrastructure

With this project, Group Carmans shows that sustainable infrastructure can be forward-looking, attractive and practical all at once. BioGravel feels natural, performs well and is produced with the environment in mind. "We want to show that innovation and ecology don't rule each other out – they reinforce each other," says the project manager. "With BioGravel we are taking a step towards a new generation of semi-paved surfaces that benefit users and the environment alike."
